Learn about Waipahu

Waipahu is a culturally diverse and welcoming community located just north of Pearl Harbor, in central Oahu. A town with a rich history and a promising future, where Waipahu now stands was once a sugar plantation. Named for the artesian spring that gave life to this area long ago, thousands of workers from China, Japan, the Philippines and other distant places were brought to Waipahu in the late 1800s to work for the Oahu Sugar Company on area plantations. Many of their descendants now proudly call Waipahu their home. Housing options range from modestly priced condos to spacious, single-family homes with big balconies offering panoramic views. The community is home to Waipahu High School and a number of public and private primary schools. Waipahu is also the site of Hawaii's Plantation Village, an outdoor museum that offers visitors a wonderful way to experience what life was like on Hawaii's sugar plantations more than one hundred years ago. Beautiful beaches are just minutes away from Waipahu. For residents who prefer to spend their free time on a gorgeous golf course, Royal Kunia Country Club is acclaimed as one of the best and most scenic courses on Oahu. Serious shoppers looking for the biggest bargains will appreciate having the Waikele Premium Outlets in town. A wide variety of fabulous American and ethnic foods can be enjoyed at restaurants in Waipahu and neighboring Waikele.
